Spoiler Discussion to Follow
I feel as though there is a lot to discuss. I like that they’re going to different places as it is their responsibility to protect their sector. I like that the other characters have a connection to Abin Sur. It’s also interesting to see them struggle to save a race.
The art is an improvement as I said previously with Jessica Cruz’s design the only thing that really throws me off. It could be a lighting issue, but I hope that’s the only reason. I’m very much surprised by the constructs that she’s pulling off now, like the Wonder Woman one. The coloring just adds vibrancy that felt lacking in the last few issues.
The events that lead up to the job suggestion are entertaining. For Jessica, it’s with regards to her own growth and how she seems to be managing her anxiety. For Simon, it’s to earn his keep with his sister. I don’t know how things will turn out for them in the next issue, but I think it could be told in a realistic, but humorous way. I’ll take Jessica Cruz as my waitress any day.
There was a moment where the two interact before diving into magma that felt kinda weird. On one hand, Simon shows his concern and Jessica goes into what feels like an episode but becomes an act. I think its essential to remind people that they’re still learning to work with each other. I was relieved that Jessica wasn’t having a breakdown.
Finally, I know very little about this alien race and this Ungarians. But that song sure had some heart to it. I wonder what it will lead to and will they face failure?
I’m telling myself to treat this is an extension rather than a much needed switch. I liked what Humphries did and I believe that Tim Seeley can continue to make it one of my favorite series since I like Nightwing already.

By the end, there's a resolution that leaves open questions regarding our villain. However, I suspect that like before its answers will be brought to the present day. There's also an awesome moment that links the past to the present.
There's a mix of action, emotion along the spectrum, and even more to look forward to. The ride with these rookies has been rewarding to say the least. My main quip is that the book suffers from rotating artists which can ruin the flow. However, Humphries puts enough story to keep you hanging on.
It feels better seeing Simon earn multiple rings for the sole chance at taking out the troublesome Volthoom. Concurrently, it's heartbreaking knowing that The First Lantern is more complex than someone who merely wants to take out the Guardians. I am making my way through the Geoff Johns run so I look forward to see what other treacherous actions lie ahead.
Jessica continues to shine even if she fails at keeping the other Lanterns alive. What a tragic showing for everyone, not just the Kryptonian. I thought that there was a neat moment in her showing the Emerald Sun to Volthoom. The exchange between felt a little therapeutic between the rookies and Volthoom.
I love the fact Simon has a ring that has been guarded for billions of years. Yes, you awesome fur guy you. And him still going on gives me life. One of Maltus’s better decisions.
I am glad to see that Lanterns are heading home. They have had quite the cosmic trip and they deserve time to have pancakes!
Curious to see where the next arc goes and how it transitions to Tim Seeley.
Overall I give this issue an 7.5/10!
